We have heard for many years now the dangers of sugary sweet drinks to our waistline. A new study reported on ABC news shows greater dangers than an increase in our weight. According to the ABC news story sugary drinks, including flavored water cause increased risk for heart disease and high cholesterol especially in women. Researchers from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center followed more than 4,000 men and women ages 45 to 84 over a five-year span monitoring their intake of sugary beverages. The researchers measured among other things, their waist size, diabetes markers, and cholesterol. Women who drank two or more sugary beverages per day were four times more likely to develop heart disease, obesity, and high cholesterol when compared with women who drank one less sugary drink per day. The study found that the results were not the same for men. Dr. Angelchik explains to women who are concerned with the shape and contour of their body that there are many factors that can contribute to an increase in the thickness in the abdominal area. Obesity drugs have been on and off the market for decades now. It seems as though when one comes on the market shortly afterwards it is pulled for safety reasons. This drug adipotide was injected into overweight monkeys and subsequently resulted in an average weight loss of 11%. This drug is exciting because it actually helps to process insulin as well. The internet provides a convenient source of information at our fingertips 24 hours a day seven days a week. Plastic surgery like other industries has been totally transformed by the internet and patient access to information. A recent online women’s magazine picked up on a study that was done through Johns Hopkins University. The study was centered around obesity and how it affects women who are having breast surgeries namely breast reduction and breast reconstruction. The study highlighted the complication rate for women who are obese and having these procedures performed. Unfortunately, the article misstated the surgeries as elective rather than reconstructive. This is a very important distinction because the information was gathered from insurance claims. This means that the participants all had surgery that the insurance company determines was medically necessary. Elective procedures such as breast augmentation are not covered by insurance because they are not medically necessary. Although the study found strong links to complications and obesity the reality is that because the surgeries were medically necessary the obesity factor may have been less of an issue. Dr. Angelchik is careful to explain to patients who are seeking either breast reduction or breast reconstructive  procedures the effects of obesity and how it may affect their recovery. The reality is for medically necessary procedures the decision to proceed with surgery is more often than not a better choice than waiting.
